EDIT 5:  This Core thing is bigger than I thought...Third (and final?) Update: Word has it dA isn't shutting down, according to this: http://spittinginsanity.deviantart.com/art/HA-551520961 of course Angelo AKA spyed had said in a comment to a former staff member they were struggling: http://comments.deviantart.com/1/548127812/3895881961
It's odd because who should we believe when the admins haven't been honest with us up front? Instead we have to go by obscure comments, hearsay and rumors. Just tell us! None of this cloak-and-dagger routine. People are asking for a major restructuring of command now!
Second Update: According to this and a testimony from a former DA Employee, they laid off 50% of the staff because of some serious budget cuts:
And apparently the budget cuts are being placed on to the employees by the Admins. The ones who tell them how to program the site. So don't get angry at the staff for putting up with their mandates... get angry at the admins for working their staff like dogs.
Update:
Core Membership - The TRUTH behind the price
UPDATE**
Okay people I'm back with a revision of this journal:
I didn't mean to be swearing at the intro, I wasn't calm mean I first made this journal and want to sincerely apologize   for those that took it way too seriously.
and...
That rumor it would shut down wasn't real entirely, it isn't a rumor at all but it was a scared speculation. So don't believe it and don't call me out for that scared tactic. It wasn't meant to be that.
Anyways back to what at hand.
And the fact of why of this in the first place:
I get it. I understand the main reason is that dA never told us. I GET THAT. I never said dA was 100% innocent , only the fact that I care about this site and don't want it die and maybe shut down. The thinkers behind the updates, the Admins, I agree we don't have a good relationship with them and they have been known to be quiet and aggressive   like that one time an user wanted to get an answer for a question regarding som

EDIT 4: Finally we get SOME other insight into this situation.. I ASK YOU ALL TO READ THIS. THE TITLE MAY SEEM ODD AT FIRST, BUT THE LINKS AND COMMENTS IT HAS SHEDS A LOT OF LIGHT. <da:thumb id="550990578"/>

EDIT 3: I reached out to a staff member for more information on this.. but here is a perspective from one of out communities Senior Members and other community members:
Some perspective on 'core membership'I know this is probably gonna be a long journal, but if you manage to read all the way through the end you might perhaps even get to learn a few things.
Furthermore I want to state that my opinion on the matter is pretty much neutral. I'm not with DeviantArt on the matter, nor am I against them. I just want to make people see things from the perspective of a 27 year old woman that has been in the web industry for the last decade.
The internet is not free
First of all, and most important thing to realize, is that the internet is not free. Everyone who lived through the early ages of web 1.0. (old people like me) knows that it costs money to run a website. Back in the day user content wasn't a thing. Whenever you wanted to put something on the internet, you needed to get a domain name and rent a piece of web hosting and that would cost you a monthly fee. Gradually

EDIT 2:    <da:thumb id="550970222"/>Are must reads. People are attacking this admins now? Guys are you SERIOUS? Stop it. I'm stilling doing research but this needs to END.

EDIT 1 :
So this journal spread around really fast. I did more digging, and was told by several people one right after the other. That the link below were bundle deals. Fair enough. I did say I don't claim to know much about DA. However... it still stands that these prices aren't anywhere near the doubled amount people are complaining about. A month was $4.95. Now it's $5 even. That 5 cents... the $15 pretty much stayed the same. there was no change there. And the $50 year, as a deviant said, was a little over a dollar extra a month... or something like that.

I'm still looking around and gathering information on what I know, and I will update this journal where needed. Still... this isn't a huge thing that needs to be screamed about of go into a huge fit of rage over. It sucks, I don't like it either... but it's not the end of the world. From what I have heard, people have a lot worse to worry about.

Listen to me. As a Married, out of college women, your money should go where it is most useful. If you are one of those that have told me that you are having trouble with bills or rent... this CORE issue, is a real easy fix. Cancel it. Seriously. YOUR WELLBEING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN NOT HAVING TO VIEW ADS ON DA. If you can't pay your bills, or pay your rent and now your stressing over paying for a core. Don't. Don't but the Core. it's not that important.. but YOU ARE. I never though I would ever have to say that. Like.. a membership on this site should take less priority than you being able to help your families and yourselves.

Go ahead... click it. That is the original price list for DA. Do you see all those percentages? Those are sales prices. DA essentially lifted those sales prices.

Now.. Look at the year Premiums... $29.95 if that was doubled it would be 59.90. But the new Premium is $50 even. That means that 10 dollars was shaved off that 'doubled' price. Really the price you paid for 12 months went up 5 CENTS A MONTH.

Listen, I don't claim to know much about DA, but I know one thing. DA is a COMPANY. I doubt that they are running out of someone's basement. They have a headquarters SOMEWHERE. Which can only mean. They Own a building. They have a lease. They have servers, domains, bills, employees, developers and upgrades that ALL must be PAID for.

Is this sudden change annoying? 'YES. I don't disagree with that. I wish they would have notified their users, but I can understand why it happened. Imagine if you had to run this place. Imagine the computer and POWER it takes to keep all the servers online. You can't run that from home, you'd go broke in the first month.

Please... enough of the witch hunts, and the yelling over this. I had to do some digging to find this, but I did, and I instantly was thankful for now flying off the handle about it.

DA has not been the greatest when it comes to customer services, but this one could have been easily avoided by both staff and users. The petition going around is too much. Change.org is not for forcing a company to change a logo, getting rid of alicorn wings, or for trivial nonsense. It is for things like huge corporation mistreating their employees, or minimum wage increases, or a young woman trying to fight the US VISA office so she can see her father...

Please I implore you all to calm down. Panicky leads to rash decision and rash decisions usually become regrettable. While it is sad that some people have already left DA due o this change, we can't really do much about it, but hopefully understand why this may have come to be, and WHAT was really changed.
