OK GUYS. I got super hyped while researching and looking up WHAT I was gonna do. SO  GRAB A DRINK AND A SNACK, SIT DOWN AND BUCKLE UP, CAUSE WE GON LEARN!

What Era is this?

This my supernatural companions is from Feudal Japan. Feudal Japan was the era in which the land was ruled by Shoguns and the merchant influence was rather weak. This also includes more well known periods like the Kamakura and the Edo Periods of Japan. Feudal Japan is known as the Age of

Warriors. Regions in Japan were ruled by Daimyos, the regions highest ranking and richest families, and also the regional Warlords or Shoguns. There was an Emperor, but he was basically a figure head, honestly.

Is Aya a Samurai?

No. Aya is not a Samurai. Samurai is actually a gender-specific term given to the male warriors who fought under their regions Shogun. The term 'Female Samurai' is a misnomer. She would never have been referred to, by her Lord or in that Time frame, under a male title. Aya is a Onna Bugeisha.

What is a Onna Bugeisha?

Simple! Onna means 'woman'. Bugeisha means 'warrior'. She is a Female Warrior. Now There may be a deeper meaning to the word Bugeisha. It can also translate to mean “one who practiced the art of war.” Not just one who has seen war, but is skilled in the art of warfare. Aya would have been trained in the art of Tantojutsu. Tantojustu is the Japanese form of knife fighting, with a Tanto or short blade. She would have also have been trained to use a Naginata or a Kaiken (Long Dagger). The also would have been trained to use a bow and Arrow and would have mastered Archery.

Women traditionally were trained to fight to

  1. Protect their households

  2. Protect areas where men were not in high abundance.

The reason they would have been trained to use these weapons, specifically the Naginata and archery, would have been that ranged battle would not have needed the traditionally male related strength factor.

You don't need to be able to hit very hard, if you can hit from far away!

During the Sengoku period, the wives of the warlords often led armies of women armed with this Naginatas into battle.

Empress Jingu and the Legend of Heike

Empress Jingu in 200 AD, lead an invasion on Korea with her army of onna bugeishas after her husband, Emperor Chuai was killed in battle. It was said that she won the invasion without a single drop of blood being spilled. In the later 1800's she became the first female on a Japanese Banknote.

Heike was also a very powerful female Warrior. From an Epic that dates prior to 1330, her story is tells of a Powerful female warrior that was ready to take on Warriors and Gods, and had the strength to master the art of Katana fighting.

SO YEAH, THAT'S ALL I...SHOULD TYPE CAUSE THIS IS GETTING LONG. I would have given her a Naginata, but it's hard to imagine her without her swords. Her twin Sabres were then replaces with Twin Katana.

YEAH AWESOME OK BYE
